Do you have the most wonderful new kitten in the world, and want her name
to be as unique as her personality or appearance? Or maybe you're trying to follow a
naming theme for your cats. Well, this page is a resource for those of us who have trouble
finding THE name that fits just right. On these pages is a compilation of many useful
Internet resources for researching and choosing a name for your cat or kitten. Most of
these are not traditional Naming Dictionaries, but all provide lists of unusual words,
names, or themes. You're limited only by your imagination!
Cat Name Sites - These sites need little
explanation: they're lists (usually quite large) of names of cats.
- 2000 Cat Names - The title says it all.
Alphabetical lists of cat names, with a handy link to the sister-site, 2000 Dog Names.
- Bow Wow Meow - "Pet names
with personality." Includes pet naming tips, names of the month, and a neato
feature that lets you search for names by origin, personality trait, physical appearance,
etc.
- Catnames List - A very long
list of cat names, arranged alphabetically.
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Pet
Database - Sponsored by the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina, this site contains
alphabetized lists of all the cat names registered with the county, with numbers of cats
by that name. Also includes a Top 500 List. Handy for Dog names, too.
 Kittynames.com - Searchable database of names that
classifies cat names into popular categories, rankings and provides cat name meanings.- Homearts.com's X Marks the Spot
- Unique pet name site generates a list of names based on criteria you (or your cats)
select.
- Magic Names for Mystic Cats -
Wonderful compilation of cat names, collected from world mythologies. Includes
African, Celtic, Japanese, and South American cat names with descriptions of origin and
meaning.
- What to Name Your Cat
- Alphabetical lists of cat names. Also includes names for pairs of cats.
- Worldwide Pet Names Project
- Browseable lists of over 7,000 pet names, arranged alphabetically.

Subject Glossaries - Ideal resources for

- ArtLex - Dictionary of visual art. Browseable both
alphabetically and by subject, this dictionary is chock full of obscure art terms perfect
for names.
- Flowerbase - Searchable index of over 10,000
flowers and plants, this site includes pictures as well as the plant's name in Latin,
English, and several additional languages.
- Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names
- If unusual place-names interest you, this is the place to go! Contains approximately
900,000 authoritative records for places, arranged in hierarchies representing all nations
of the modern world. Not the most user-friendly search and browse functions, but produces
wonderful results. Check out their Help Page for more
information.
- The International Lyrics Server - Unfortunately, the
lyrics section of this excellent site has been shut down. At this point, the site
can provide only artist, album, and song title listings. Still a very useful site.
- Internet Movie Database - fully searchable database
of all types of moves (Big Screen, TV, video). A must for film-buffs.
- OneLook Dictionaries - HUGE searchable index of
nearly 350 dictionaries. Results of searches list the source dictionary and web page. Also
includes a list of individual subject dictionaries.
- The Webtender - If you or your cats are Party
Animals, check out this site for cool names styled after your favorite cocktails.
Browse the recipes, search by ingredient, or randomly generate a recipe. Lots of
neat potential names like Cyberlady and Ice Cream Genius.

Historical Resources - Sources for
biographical and historical names. Great for those who believe their cat has had past
lives.
- Biographical Dictionary - Interested in names
of historical figures? This site allows searches by name, date, profession, and other
keywords. The only drawback is its limit of 25 hits for very broad searches.
- Dictionary of Phrase and
Fable - Browseable (but unfortunately not searchable) dictionary of the meanings and
origins of words, phrases and proper names not found in conventional dictionaries. Lots of
information and potential names!
- Encyclopedia Mythica - Comprehensive
browseable and searchable encyclopedia of mythology, legend, and folklore of multiple
cultures including Greek, Roman, Latvian...
- Folklore and Mythology Electronic
Texts - Full-text (but not searchable) folk tales, fairy tales, and myths arranged by
topic or subject matter.

Human Baby Name Sites - Most of these sites
are geared for choosing the perfect name for a human child, but many of them offer very
diverse and unusual names --many of them perfect for our Fur Children. Also see Names by Origin.
- Babynamer.com
- Searchable database of over 20,000 names. Browse lists arranged by popularity, meaning,
and celebrity, or search based on gender, culture, popularity, or number of syllables.
Choose "Select a List" to get started.
- Baby Names! - Possibly the most useful of these
sites. Alphabetical lists, but with the added feature of a search engine that allows
queries of either Name or Meaning. Includes origin of names. Also available are
sub-categories such as Shakespearean names and Soap Opera names.
- Homepagers' Baby Name Locator -
Searchable name index that provides meaning and origin of the name. Also browseable
alphabetically. [This service is a smaller version of the Dogwood Compendium of Names, a
writers' resource that can be purchased.]
- Parent Soup Baby Name Finder - Another
top site! Finder Popourri lists unusual names by category, such as sports or flowers.
Find-O-Matic generates names based on your selection of initial letter, number of
syllables, and other criteria. Also includes a baby name dictionary with alphabetical
listings.
- ParentTime - allows
browsing by categories such as gender, origin, celebrities, etc.
- Parent Zone Baby Names List -
Separated by gender, alphabetical lists that include the name's meaning.

Names by Origin - Lists of modern and
historic names for those who are looking for names associated with a particular culture or
nationality. Several Human Baby Name Sites
also provide this information.
- Alfabette Zoope - Name lists
extensively compiled from all cultures, alphabetically arranged with pronunciation guide.
- Fiona Hyland's Irish Names - Designed for
human baby names, but also includes a special section of Irish names for pets.
- Indian Baby Names -
Alphabetical lists, separated by gender, of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain names with
their Sanskrit meanings.
- Iranian/Persian Names -
Alphabetical index of male and female names from Iran (with pronunciation guide) Includes
names of Arabic, Indian, Kurdish, and Turkish origins that are used in Iran as well.
- Middle
Eastern Dance Resource Guide: Names - "Names for Dancers and Other Graceful
Souls." Includes male and female names and meanings, and a brief pronunciation guide.
- Onomastikon (Dictionary of Names) - A
wonderful collection of names from around the world, from many countries and periods.
Includes short historical backgrounds and limited pronunciation guides.
- The Strange and Unusual of Names - Huge
collection of names, categorized into nicely browseable lists. Check out the
"Unique Names" and the "Great Sibling Names" lists, which include a
ton of uncommon and unusual names with pronunciation.
